2008 has been declared International Year of Sanitation by the UN. About 2.6 billion people or 42% of Earth’s population lack access to basic sanitation. Inadequate handling of wastewater has serious consequences for human health, the environment and economic development. It contaminates the water supply, increasing the risk of infectious diseases and deteriorating groundwater and other local ecosystems. But the cost of treating wastewater can be very high and governments often have insufficient resources available for mitigating action.

Waste Water Works (WWW) is a sustainable wastewater treatment solution developed at CASCADE Clean Energy, Inc. WWW, developed from a Small Business Innovation Research contracts from US Army CASCADE (Computer-Assisted Strain Construction and Development Engineering) increases the efficiency of clean energy production (e.g. methane, hydrogen or electricity) from wastewater, maximizes the efficiency of Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC). WWW reduces treatment costs while also generating clean energy from wastewater. Ninety-nine percent of current wastewater treatment facilities do not recover any energy from wastewater, while the remaining 1% only harvest 15% of the total energy stored in the organic waste. Our patented technology utilizes smart microorganisms to optimize the sludge digestion process and microbial fuel cell (MFC) to recover clean energy from wastewater. This represents a $15B market in the U.S., and $60B globally addressable by our technology and business solutions. This solution has the potential to generate $10 billion of methane or electricity, saves another $10 billion in energy costs, while still cleaning wastewaters effectively for the wastewater treatment facilities in U.S. alone.

Dr.  Gene Jiang, a well known Microbiologist joined Cascade team.  Dr. Jiang received his Ph.D. in microbiology from Southern Illinois University in 1999.

CASCADE won a PIER Grant from California Energy, Committee. The project is scheduled to start in July 2010.

Cascade opens its lab and operation in China. (9-24-2009)
